A well known medication for acne is Accutane, that is the brand name for a isotretinoin. It isn’t for wimps. It’s controversial. This medication for acne is only effective for some in acne skin care treatment, but you pretty much have to be desperate to try it. There can be side effects to all medication for acne. Serious side effects. If you’re a parent, and your child’s dermatologist is telling you that accutane is the next step in a series of treatments that haven’t worked, think very carefully before you try it, and consider alternative approaches offered by non-traditional practitioners such as naturopaths.

Accutane has a very bad reputation in my books as an effective acne medicine. Acne home remedies are way safer forms for treatment. Naturapaths will offer alternative acne treatments such as they offer a regimen of high doses of vitamins, herbs, gentle topical acne treatments and changes in diets that can eliminate acne blemishes and pimples for some without harmful side effects of acne medicine like Accutane. An alternative acne natural treatment is not very expensive to try, and certainly worth a try if it means sparing your child the risks associated with acne medicines like Accutane. Natural acne alternative is the best acne treatment by far.

What are the side effects? The biggie, the really scary one is that there is a high risk of severe birth defects if you become pregnant while taking Accutane. Some teens are sexually active; some aren’t. Some are responsible about birth control; some aren’t. If you have a daughter who is not sexually active, she’ll have to take birth control pills along with Accutane. What could this medication be doing to someone who takes it if it causes birth defects? Is it worth taking the risk?

Other side effects can include dry and itchy skin, chapped lips, muscle and joint pain, irritated eyelids, decreased night vision, nosebleeds, skin rashes, intestinal discomfort, urinary symptoms, headaches, increased susceptibility to sunburn, and depression-even thoughts of suicide.

Now, some people with very bad acne have suicidal thoughts too because it is such a difficult experience for a young person to be disfigured by acne blemishes.

Another potential side effect is liver damage. This is serious enough so that if you take Accutane, you have to get regular blood tests to monitor the level of fat in your blood to make sure your liver isn’t failing.

Another thing. It might not work. And for some people, it will work only while you’re taking it and as soon as you stop taking it, back comes the acne problem. It is a form of acne control only while on the medication. Not an acne cure at all. But you’re only supposed to take Accutane for a limited time. So, for many it’s taking a serious risk for an acne solution that’s only temporary.

There are people who have had success with Accutane. Otherwise dermatologists wouldn’t be subscribing it. It’s just a good idea to make sure all less invasive options have been exhausted before stepping into an acne skin care treatment that has potential to do so much harm.

There are many different types of acne and with that come many theories, myths, and treatments. The exact cause of acne remains a mystery. Why some pores are affected by acne and others aren’t, is not known. Each case of acne is as complex as the individual battling it and a treatment that works on one person’s acne may not work on yours.

Acne obviously has physical effects but it can also have psychological effects, especially in teens. Most teenagers already feel awkward and different, add acne to the equation and they are identifiably different. Adult acne is on the rise and can also be very difficult to deal with. Due to the changes that our skin goes through as we mature, scarring is often worse in adults with acne than in teens with acne. Adults with acne are also less likely than teens to seek treatment for their acne, leaving them to suffer alone.

Whether you are an adult with acne or a teenager with acne, your acne probably falls into one of a two main categories, inflammatory acne or non-inflammatory acne. If you have blackheads or whiteheads, or both, then you have non-inflammatory acne. Inflammatory acne can be a little harder to identify. Inflammatory acne is characterized by papules, pustules, and in more serious cases, nodules or cysts.

Once you have determined which category your acne falls into, you can explore the treatment options for your acne. Although calling it a disease would be a stretch, acne is one of the most expensive afflictions affecting mankind today. Estimated to torment more than 80% of teenagers and young adults, the US market for anti-acne prescription medicine is over (US)$1.6 billion dollars annually.

Prologue and Rationale

Acne is a skin disorder resulting from the action of hormones on the skin’s oil glands (sebaceous glands) which leads to plugged pores (blackheads and whiteheads), pimples, and outbreaks of cysts or nodules commonly called pimples and they may occur on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders and even the upper arms. The acne affects most of the teenagers. However, the disease is not restricted to any age group; adults in there 20s - even into their 40s - can get acne. Being not a life threatening health condition, acne is still upsetting and disfiguring as sometimes it leads to permanent and serious scarring. Even less severe cases leads to scarring. Symptoms

There are two main types of acne: non-inflammatory and inflammatory. In non-inflammatory acne, there are usually just a few whiteheads and blackheads on the face. With inflammatory acne, the whiteheads become inflamed, and pimples and pustules develop. In its most severe form, inflammatory acne can cause disfiguring cysts and deep, pitting scars of the face, neck, back and chest.

Causes

The main cause of acne is a devitalized condition of the skin resulting from unhygienic living habits. Other causes of acne are excessive use of tea, coffee, alcohol or tobacco, strenuous studies, masturbation and sedentary habits, which lead to indigestion and general debility.

Treatment
1. Apply orange peel pounded well with water to the affected area.
2. Apply Cucumber leaves or grated pieces for acne cure.
3. Rub the affected area with a fresh cut clove of garlic.
4. Apply clove based face mask or a paste of Fenugreek (Methi ) leaves overnight on acne and wash off next morning.
5. The lemon has also proved beneficial in removing pimples and acne. It can be applied regularly.
6. Grind the bark of neem and turmeric (haldi) together in water. Rub the paste on the affected parts.
7. Rub a piece of sandalwood on a clean stone, using a little of rose water or cucumber juice to make a paste. This pack will give a fresh feeling and will discourage acne.
8. Rub jaiphal nut with sandal powder and unboiled milk and apply the paste on the acne. Wash after one hour. Do this regularly till you get 100% results.
9. Mashed papaya applied on the face helps clear scars and marks on the skin.
10. A teaspoonful of coriander juice, mixed with a pinch of turmeric powder, is another effective home remedy for pimples and blackheads. The mixture should be applied to the face after thoroughly washing it, every night before retiring.
11. The juice of raw potatoes has also proved useful in clearing skin blemishes. This cleansing results from high content of potassium, sulphur, phosphorus and chlorine in the potato.
12. In nature cure, the main emphasis is on diet and certain water applications.
13. A Multani Mitti pack is an effective way to control pimples.
14. A spoonful of honey mixed with rose water can be taken daily.
15. Any sulphur soap can be used to wash the acne face daily.

Prevention

1. Regularly clean the skin.
2. Have a well-balanced, regular diet. Emphasis should be on foods rich in fibre such as raw foods, especially fresh fruit and vegetables, sprouted seeds, raw nuts and whole grain cereals, especially millet and brown rice to prevent constipation, the main cause of acne.
3. To keep the face pores open light steam should be given once a week.
4. Drink at least 1 liter of water a day to impart a healthy glow to the skin.
5. Starchy, protein and fatty foods should be restricted.
6. Meats, sugar, strong tea or coffee, condiments, pickles, refined and processed foods should be avoided.

Cleaning methods to be followed for acne skin

1. Apply a suitable home made face pack and keep it for 10-15 minutes. 2. Remove the pack and blot the residue with a cold, wet towel.
3. Moisten a piece of cotton with an antiseptic lotion and touch each every pimple or acne.
4. Antibiotic lotions can also be applied after cleaning the face.

In all cases of skin problems high standards of personal hygiene, balanced diet, congenial environs, gay and happy mood will go along way in preventing acne and quick recovery. Adult acne - why must we suffer aging skin AND acne?

As a young woman who suffered through agonizing periods of merciless acne breakouts in the already angst-filled years of my young adulthood, I thought that once I became an "adult", I would no longer have to suffer the unbearable cycles of noticeable, painful cystic acne. I remember feeling like every zit on my face was the focal point in every conversation I had with people, and I swore that everyone had clearer skin than I did. Even a day with clear skin was like a rare treat to me, to be savored cautiously, as I knew it would never last, and a breakout was just waiting for it’s next opportunity to strike.

Little did I know, that when I hit adulthood, my battles with acne were far from over. Even as I had my twenty-fifth birthday, I still had to battle that neverending cycle of clear skin, followed by periods of days or even weeks where my skin would inexplicably erupt into a maze of strategically placed blemishes, mostly on the chin area, forehead, and around the nose. I still found myself searching for the latest acne products and treatments at drugstores, all of which didn’t work at all. They merely dried my skin and made it look worse by adding redness and chafing to my growing list of skin problems.

There are many other adults that are finding they still have to fight the battle with acne - now coined "adult acne". Why is it, that even beyond our adolescent years of hormonal turmoil, we are finding that we must battle a new enemy, the formidable adult acne that we thought we might be fortunate enough to escape since we paid our dues in our teenage years. It is estimated that more than fifty percent of adult women between the ages of twenty-five and fifty-eight have some type of adult acne, and those numbers are only getting larger.

So what do the experts have to say about the cause of adult acne? Hormonal fluctuations are the most common cause of adult acne, followed by stress, which in itself actually triggers hormonal imbalances, especially in women. So basically, any way you cut it, adult acne is primarily caused by hormonal shifts and fluctuations, many times caused by stress, but also caused by diet, lifestyle changes, birth control pills, medications, and so many other circumstances.

Some good lifestyle rules to stick to for clear skin are pretty much common sense, but nonetheless are worth repeating. Eating a balanced diet, with adequate protein, little or no refined sugar products (which cause hormones to spike up and down rapidly), and plenty of skin-nourishing fruits and vegetables is an absolute must for clear, healthy skin. I notice that after even one day of a refined sugar binge, I may wake up to a puffy, red and sometimes slightly broken out face. This is proof that you are what you eat - especially when it comes to your skin.

Second, try to diminish stress levels by taking walks, getting cardiovascular exercise of some sort, or practicing relaxation techniques in the form of yoga, meditation, or tai-chi. It sound trivial, but stress levels and how you allow yourself to be affected by daily stress, really reflects in your skin’s appearance.

Third, you really should consider giving a natural acne treatment a try. When all else failed, and it was clear that nothing else would work to permanently clear my skin, or at least get the ball rolling to even my hormone levels out and purify my skin from the inside of my body, I tried a natural acne remedy that I am forever grateful for. I still have clear skin today, and get compliments on how good it looks, at age 30. Fighting with acne can be a harrowing experience, especially when nothing seems to work to get rid of it. Creams and chemicals can get expensive, not to mention the damage and dryness they can cause. First off, here are some general tips to help improve the look of your skin:

-A well-balanced diet is the foundation for healthy skin. It will ensure that your body receives the proper nutrients needed to support and maintain the health of your skin. Foods rich in sulphur, such as garlic or onions, may be particularly helpful in maintaining good skin.

-Cleansing twice daily with a gentle cleanser will keep your face free of dirt, oil, pollutants, and perspiration. It is important not to overwash or use harsh cleansers, as they can make things worse.

-NO POPPING! As tempting (and pleasurable) as picking at or popping zits can be, keep your hands off your face!

In addition to medications and store-bought treatments, there are many home-made remedies that can work wonders. Of course make sure you do not have allergies to any of these foods. Remember, they are going on your face, a very sensitive part of the body. Try as much of these remedies as you’d like. Some are simple, while some are more complex. Do whatever is easiest and find what works best for you.

1. Grind some nutmeg into some milk, then apply to the face

2. Mix some honey and ground cinnamon in to a paste. Apply at night, then wash off in the morning. Do this for a few weeks and you’ll see your pimples disappear!

3. Apply fresh mint juice to your face each night, or try adding some turmeric powder to make a paste, then wash off after about 30 minutes.

4. Drink lots of wheatgrass.

5. Make a paste with salt and vinegar, apply to face, then wash off after 20-30 minutes.

6. To remove blackheads, make a paste of ground radish seeds and water.

7. Make a paste of sandalwood and rosewater. Wash off after 30 minutes.

8. Mix equal parts of lemon juice and ground cinnamon, leave on for about 30 minutes.

9. Rub fresh garlic on pimples. With regular application, pimples will disappear.

10. Rub a raw papaya (skin, seeds, and all) on swelling pimples.

11. Add lime juice to some boiled milk as a face wash.

12. Apply raw tomato pulp to your face, then wash off after about an hour.

13. Grind an orange peel in water to make a paste, then apply to the face.

Also, herbal remedies can be very useful in the treatment and prevention of acne. Chamomile, lavender, juniper, bergamot, dandelion root, and burdock root can all be used to reduce toxicity in the skin and improve its overall condition. Other herbs like echinacea and poke root have anti-inflammatory properties that can help to reduce the swelling and reduce of the blocked oil gland. Red clover may be beneficial for its estrogenic action and witch hazel has excellent astringent properties and may be very effective for cleansing acne prone skin.

The origin of pimples/acne is still unknown. There are still a few issues, which have not been brought to light. Nobody exactly knows why the pores collapse and pack the sebum content within the skin. Researchers have not been able to find as to how this process spreads from one sebaceous gland to another.

Acne is a skin disease, which is created by the clogged pores on the skin. It is a major problem for millions of teenagers, both male and female. It makes a person depressed and so proper treatment is necessary.

In 1979, Maurice Messe’gue’, the famous French herbalist, who practiced herbal footbaths for all kinds of ailments, wrote a book called “Health Secrets of Plants and Herbs.” In this book he outlined his footbath treatment for Eczema.

I have listed his herbal recommendations and have added a few more that are effective in reducing eczema symptoms. I have listed 11 herbs that you can buy in small quantities, ½ oz, to mix together, produce a tea, and use in a footbath.

As mentioned in my other article on footbaths, create a tea, with herbs and let them sit for 20-30 minutes. Then strain and add them to a footbath. Use the footbath in the morning and evening for 10 – 14 minutes.

Use at least 9 of the herbs listed here.

Artichoke leaves – You can use artichoke leaves dried whole or cut down and as an extract. Artichoke leaves have been used for indigestion and irritable bowel syndrome. They help increase bile and help the liver to regenerate. The liver needs to be in good condition to help eczema conditions when excess toxins are contributing to eczema. The liver helps to detoxify colon toxins and other toxins that may reach eczema locations and cause inflammation.

What I do is just buy some artichokes and cut them into small pieces – about a small hand full – boil water and put them into the boiling water for 2-3 minutes. Then I take the boiling water off the stove and put my herbs.

Elecampane leaves – This herb is used to expel intestinal parasites, helps to pull toxins out of the body, stimulate digestion and the immune system. A tea of leaves and roots help clean the skin by removing toxins and allowing your immune system to heal your skin. Cabbage leaves – these leaves are known to reduce your susceptibility to cancer. It is thought that cabbage leaves have anti-inflammatory action. Cabbage has a healing action on open wounds. You can use fresh cabbage cut into small pieces and add them to the boiling water at the same time you add the artichokes. Nettles – Nettle tea is good for wounds, stings, and burns. It is also used to eliminate worms and for colon disorders. Many times skin disorders can be the result of a toxic colon. That is why cleansing and detoxifying the colon will help with any type of skin problem. Sage – is a strong astringent, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory. It increases blood circulation, and helps digestive problems.

Lavender –It is used for inflammation from insect bites. Lavender helps to calms nerves. Many of the skin disorders stem from anxiety and nervous conditions which lower the immune system. This allows toxins or heredity conditions to surface and re-establish themselves as skin diseases.

Marigold – is used for pain and skin swelling. It is good for wounds, sprains, and inflamed and sore eyes.

Arnica – stimulates blood circulation and increases blood pressure. It is used for eczema and acne. It has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It can reduce swelling and pain and helps heal wounds.

Burdock root – Has an excellent history of helping bruises, swelling, and joint pain. It can help to eliminate ringworm on the surface of the skin.

Black Walnut – hull and leaves are used to rid you of various kinds of worms throughout the body. It is useful in constipation, parasitic and fungal infection. It also helps eczema, acne, herpes, skin parasites, and psoriasis.

Yarrow Flowers – helps to improve liver function. It has antiseptic and viral properties. It firms and tones tissue outside and inside the body. It helps to boost your immunity and kills many types of pathogens. Its oils absorb toxins and help the body dispose of them without out creating side effects.

There you have it. Don’t be afraid of buying separate herbs and creating an herbal mixture that you can use in a footbath for eczema, acne and other skin conditions. One last thing, when you use the footbath, you will stir up toxins that may increase skin breakouts but this will pass as the footbaths help to clean out your body.
